Just like any illness or injury, adjusting to life with the stress of a previous stroke and the worry of a future stroke happening can be difficult. The tides have calmed and the storm is over, but after the initial storm there’s always the aftershocks. That is what we call recovery after a stroke, one aftershock after another and it can be a little overwhelming.

Support

Recovery from a stroke isn’t the same for everyone, there are different types of strokes that affect others in a multitude of ways. They can be minor, moderate or severe, but the backlash from any kind of stroke can still leave a person feeling damaged and unable to adjust to life outside of their recovery. Some people even rely on wheelchairs after a stroke, while others might experience damage to the brain. Each case is different which means each recovery is different, and that can lead to confusion when trying to take your life back.

No matter the differences in the type of stroke experienced, one thing remains certain for all survivors; they need support. Rehabilitation is an exhausting process, it can drain you mentally and physically and often times the best solution is moral support during this process.

Whether it’s a family member, friend, or caretaker, it’s always a good idea to offer a hand and an ear post-stroke because it can change their outlook on the situation entirely. With a little optimism, recovery can be much less overwhelming.

Resources

There are hundreds of innovative resources to make living post-stroke less of a challenge, such as car transfer aids. These transfer aids can make getting in and out of vehicles less of a challenge, allowing you to safely get to doctor appointments and check-ups.

Many stroke survivors focus on activities that stimulate the brain because it can help aid in any damage done to it, but most of these stimulants require a writing utensil. In most stroke cases, it can cause a partial paralysis that makes it difficult to gain full function, so activities that require hand movement can be quite taxing. These writing aids can make these activities relaxing again without stressing the nerves or damaging your hands further.

The Road to Recovery

Making a full recovery is a long and grueling process, sometimes it’s hard to take the right steps in the right order to get back to good health. There is no right or wrong steps, however, and it doesn’t matter how many you take or when you take them, all that matters is you’re moving forward at your own pace. The first step is already laid out for you, leaving the hospital and returning home. The rest is up to your body, it will tell you when it’s ready to take those leaps and bounds to a full recovery, so don’t push it too far.
