Having a stroke can be a scary experience, and recovering from one can be intimidating. However, most people will at least partially recover from the stroke. Here are a few tips that will increase your chances to have a successful recovery:

#1 Reduce Chances of Another Stroke

If you have a stroke, it often is due to hypertension or diabetes. After you have the first stroke, another one is more likely. So, it is vital to take care of your health. Take medication for your blood pressure or diabetes, as directed by your doctor. Also, eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, and keep your weight under control.

#2 Use a Stroke Recovery Program

You can use many health professionals to design an appropriate stroke recovery program, including physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language therapists. All of these will work closely with you to help you recover skills you may have lost. Work with your doctor to coordinate all of these other health care options for your stroke recovery.

#3 Maximize Insurance Coverage

Your insurance may cover more of your rehabilitation expenses than you think after a stroke. Talk to your doctor or an insurance representative about what the coverage should include. You may have to talk to several people at the insurance company to determine exactly what you are entitled to, so be persistent.

#4 Get Help in the Home

You might need some assistance with your daily activities after you have a stroke. It may seem hard to depend on others to help you with shopping, meals and dressing, but it’s ok! Let your friends and family assist you until you can do it yourself again. Consider some inexpensive stroke aid products to help you, such as the Multi-Function Food Preparation Board:

#5 Make Sure Your Home Is Safe

Risk of fall increases after a stroke, and a fall can lead to bleeding and bruising. So, be sure that your hallways and walkways are free of clutter. Also, make sure that floors are not slick and that all throw rugs are secure on the floor. You may also need to have grab bars installed in the shower:
